The Boston Bruins' most significant issue since the 2025 trade deadline has been finding a consistent linemate who could match David Pastrnak's skill level. Morgan Geekie has been reaping the benefits of Pastrnak's playmaking abilities, but their line with Elias Lindholm last season had more bad moments than good.
James Hagens felt like a great left winger to put opposite Pastrnak, as the pair could feed off each other with their mix of playmaking and goalscoring abilities, but last season might've shown that Hagens being a consistent first-liner is still a couple of years off. It would've made zero sense to make Pastrnak wait for that to come to fruition, which is why they used some draft capital to acquire JJ Peterka.
Peterka is by no means a sure thing, but if he manages to hit his ceiling with the Bruins, it is going to solve the Bruins' most significant issue. Most of last season was spent trying to find a linemate for Pastrnak, but if Marco Sturm can set the pair together at both five-on-five and on the power play, they'll be able to figure out the rest of the lineup while assuming that the first line will be fine.
There are still some things to figure out, such as whether it'll be the easy answer of Pavel Zacha playing in the middle of the first line or whether a different option like Fraser Minten will steal the spot in just his second season. However, if the chemistry develops between Pastrnak and Peterka, it may not matter who is in the middle, and it could create some great depth options down the lineup.

There are no guarantees this pairing will work out. However, there is no doubt that Peterka could potentially be the most skilled linemate Pastrnak has had since Brad Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers. A left-shot, pass-first winger to complement Pastrnak and get him back to his scoring ways instead of having to be a playmaker every night would do the Bruins a world of good.
Peterka's career-high in points came in the 2024-25 season when he had 68 points in 77 games. It was a rough first and only year for him in Utah, with just 47 points in 82 games, but the belief is that he will be closer to his Buffalo form if he can create some chemistry with Pastrnak. The Bruins superstar has an ability to get the most out of his linemates, and Peterka may be the perfect next target for him to do it.
