NHL writer drops bold, but correct statement on Bruins' addition of JJ Peterka

This summer, there were multiple needs for the Boston Bruins when it comes to roster construction. Despite the front office saying that they were looking to address multiple needs, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it looks like just one need was going to be addressed.

That need for a right-wing in the top-six was addressed right before the NHL Entry Draft in June, when the Bruins acquired JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth for a pair of first-round draft picks. It seemed like a high price to pay, and if Peterka underperforms in 2026-27, then he'll hear about it. However, Scott Maxwell of the Daily Faceoff dropped a subtle line that certainly can be true.

"The Bruins might be as ideal of a landing spot for Peterka as there can be in the league,'' wrote Maxwell.

Saying Boston is an ideal landing spot for Peterka might seem like a bit much; however, it's not that far from reality. He was traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Mammoth last summer and had what some considered a down year. Peterka had 25 goals and 22 assists in 82 regular-season games. In the first-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights in the postseason, he was pointless in five games.

Boston is hoping to get the upside that the Sabres have for two seasons in Western New York. In two seasons with Buffalo, Peterka had 55 goals and 63 assists in 159 games. He potted a career-high 28 goals in 2023-24 before netting 27 the following season. Scoring 25 goals isn't really considered a down season for some players, but with Peterka, it was.

In Boston, he'll likely slot in on the top line with Pavel Zacha and David Pastrnak. If he can crack at least the 30-goal plateau, then it will turn out to be a good deal for the Black and Gold. Considering where he'll fit in the lineup for second-year head coach Marco Sturm, there are not many first-line landing spots that Peterka could have had with the talent he'll be playing with in Boston.

The Bruins basically swapped out Viktor Arvidsson, who left for the Detroit Red Wings in free agency this summer, for Peterka. They had similar seasons offensively. However, Boston needed to add speed to the lineup, and even though they are bringing on more money than Arvidsson would have cost them, it was a move that was necessary.
