Boston College has long been known as a pillar of college hockey. Still a perennial top choice at a national championship, with rosters loaded full of NHL talent one thing stands out this year about their team. It’s loaded with Bruins draft picks. 6 players of the team’s total roster this season are part of the Bruins’ organization. It’s the most players on the same team by a wide margin.
James Hagens was the bright big future star ready for the call up last year. He had a really strong Freshman year and followed that up with being a Hobey Baker Finalist and a Bruin’s call up towards the end of the season .Â
There are a lot of positives to find being in this situation of having so many prospects playing with Boston College. First and foremost is the incredible coaching and professionalism of the organization. This is important because it is showing it can help generate true NHL talent. The program always has a player or two truly explode onto the scene in a big way.Â
This past year the explosion came in the form of Dean Letourneau having 39 points in 36 games. That was following a 3 point, zero goals freshman year. He also played a decent amount toward the end of the year with Hagens, and that could be potentially interesting in the future.Â
So, who's next to follow? Will Moore.
Is Will Moore the next Bruins bg prospect out of Boston College?
He’s a 6 foot 3 freshman that plays center and had 10 points last year. He’s primed to make a big impact on BC’s roster this upcoming season. Letourneau will almost certainly find himself in the spoked B after their season ends, and Moore could definitely trend in that direction with a good year.
Moore falls somewhere in between where Hagens and Letourneau were. Hagens had immediate pop and Letourneau started about as slow as you could being a first round draft pick, followed with over a point per game the next year. Moore was comfortably in the middle. He’s a great player with a great sense of the game, finishing the season with 10 points.
He was selected for the u18 World Junior Championships, which should hopefully translate into being selected for the major tournament. That would be a great opportunity to showcase a young talent that also plays down the middle of the ice.
There’s a lot to really look forward to in Moore that should make Bruins fans really want to tune into some BC games this season. It seems there might be a glimmer of hope for the Bruins prospect pool after a while. And it seems like there’s the BC coaching and training staff to thank for that.Â
With positives there of course come a few negatives and one of them is to focus a little bit more on the defensive side of the play. It’s not flashy or pretty in any way, but the Bruins have prided themselves on their centermen on being responsible in all aspects of the game. Especially defensively. Bergeron and Krejci led the way there for the better part of two decades.Â
There’s a lot of developing still to be done, and some big jumps to be made, but watch out for Moore in the not so distant future. Hopefully a breakout year leads to a top option year, which leads to finding himself in a Bruins jersey making his NHL debut. Â
