Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney is a person who has a lot of eyes on him this summer. After his team was bounced in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Buffalo Sabres in six games, Sweeney agreed with president Cam Neely that more talent was needed on the roster for next season.
So far, it's hard to say that they have done that. However, Sara Civian of Bleacher Report believes that progress has been made to improve the Black and Gold for the 2026-27 season. She had one word for every team's offseason to date, and hers for the Bruins was "Sound.''
"The Bruins had a great get in JJ Peterka, especially with fellow German Marco Sturm as head coach, as Peterka looks for a bounce-back season. They also slightly improved their defensive depth with Will Borgen and Connor Clifton,'' Civian wrote. "Do they need a bigger upgrade on defense to compete in the much-improved Atlantic? Yes. Did they make some solid moves that'll round out the team for next season? Also yes.''
Bruins fans still waiting for the big offseason move
Let's be honest, aside from Peterka, do any of those moves actually move the needle this offseason for the Bruins? Is Will Borgen going to be the answer on defense? Is bringing back Connor Clifton the right move? Can Boston survive next season without adding a top-six center? Can Boston's defense stay healthy and have success in what is turning into a loaded Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference?
A lot of questions with very few answers right now. That's not good. Bruins fans would love to have a few more of those questions answered that haven't been. Finding a top-six center isn't going to be easy. It might be safe to say that if Sweeney hasn't got one now, he likely won't. That could be a problem beginning in September.
The addition of Peterka is one that could turn into gold, like Viktor Arvidsson did last season after he was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers. However, Boston would like a little more production from Peterka than what Arvidsson gave them. There is still time to make another move, and it feels like another move is necessary for it really to be a "Sound'' offseason in Boston for Sweeney and the front office.
