Training camp gets underway for the Boston Bruins and the rest of the NHL this week. Players have arrived in their cities and have been there for some days. Last week, the Bruins had a pair of captains' practices at Warrior Ice Arena on Tuesday and Thursday.
However, there was one small problem. The Boston Bruins don't have a captain. They haven't had one since Brad Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline in March of 2025. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about who would be the next captain of the Black and Gold, and they still don't have one.
Bruins appear to be heading into the 2026-27 season without a captain
On Tuesday, the Bruins' social media accounts dropped a post of some Boston players going in for a preseason photo shoot. Seen walking into the photo shoot were Charlie McAvoy, David Pastrnak, and Hampus Lindholm. All three players were spotted with an "A" on their jerseys. Nobody had a "C" on their jersey.

After playing last season without a captain, it appears that they are going down the road of doing it again, and if so, it is not something that will sit well with fans. The two clear choices are McAvoy or Pastrnak with most wanting Pastrnak to be the next captain. You have to think that if they did the shoot today with and "A" on their jersey, that's how the season is beginning.
Now, there are other teams across the NHL that don't have a captain named yet. However, on Tuesday, the Chicago Blackhawks named Connor Bedard their captain, and the New York Islanders named Bo Horvat their captain. Pastrnak and McAvoy each have a much longer tenure with the Black and Gold than either player does with those clubs.
Let's not beat around the bush; the Boston Bruins not naming a captain is bizarre. It really is. Why not name one? Pastrnak and McAvoy playing the rest of their time together in Boston, with neither wearing the "C," is going to be odd. Now, this could just be a ploy by the Bruins social media team, but if you're going to name one, you would think that they would have a picture taken with the "C" on it.
Who knows, maybe there will be a Ray Bourque moment and one of the players will take off their jersey in a social media post and will have the "C" underneath. Then again, with the way the Bruins do things, that is unlikely.
