When it comes to moves made by Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney, he made one big move this offseason, swinging for forward JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth for a pair of first-round draft picks. It was a move that was made moments before the NHL Entry Draft began in Buffalo in late June.
Peterka is likely going to join the first line with Pavel Zacha and David Pastrnak, if we had to guess, when the puck officially drops on the 2026-27 season on Sept. 29 against the New York Rangers. Peterka has yet to play a game for the Black and Gold, but there is already some pressure out on him by one NHL writer.
JJ Peterka is tabbed as a player who must deliver for the Bruins this season
Ryan Dixon of Sportsnet listed one player on each Atlantic Division team that must deliver in 2026-27, and for the Bruins, his choice was Peterka. That is a little surprising given that he hasn't played a game yet for the Bruins, but he is likely seen as a player replacing Viktor Arvidsson's production.
"Peterka figures to get a great opportunity playing on the left side of Boston’s top line with superstar David Pastrnak to his right. At 24 years old, perhaps Peterka can finally settle in somewhere and find the best version of his game,'' wrote Dixon.
Playing with Pastrnak would help anyone's numbers, but maybe the bar was a little too high for Peterka in Utah. In his year in Western New York with the Buffalo Sabres, he had 27 goals and 41 assists in 77 games. Last season for the Mammoth, Peterka had 25 goals and 22 assists. Those were similar numbers to what Arvidsson put up in his one season with the Black and Gold.
The Bruins zeroed in on Peterka as someone who maybe could benefit from a change of scenery. However, calling it that after just one year in Utah is a bit of a stretch. If there is hope for Bruins fans that this is a move that will work out and Peterka will once again reach his potential, fans don't need to look further than at Morgan Geekie and Pavel Zacha as players the Bruins went after, given the success they've had in Boston.
Playing with Zacha and Pastrnak will certainly help Peterka and solidify the top-six and the Bruins' power-play units. We'll find out early in the season how well this is going to work out for the Black and Gold.
