As Bruins fans ramp up for the new season, we are seeing either new faces or faces from the team's past. Today, we are analyzing JJ Peterka, seeing what he brings to the table and who he is as a player.
JJ Peterka's professional career
JJ is 24 years old, playing out of Munich, Germany. He was drafted back in 2020 and picked up by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round as a third pick. While in Buffalo, he played with some of our current players, such as Casey Mittelstadt, Henri Jokiharju, and Connor Clifton. He peaked in Buffalo, but was unfortunately traded to Utah in exchange for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring. He signed a 5-year contract extension for $38.5 million overall.
He was picked up by the Utah Mammoth in 2025 and played his last season with them, then was traded to the Bruins on June 26 of this year. Utah got two draft picks (one for this year's draft and one for 2028), in a trade for Peterka to go to Boston. It's rumored he was traded due to reasons such as roster fit, asset management, and a "mutual reset" after his one season in Utah.
He was added to Team Germany for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, getting one goal and three assists. He has also represented Germany more than once in the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) World Championships in the years 2021, 2023, and 2024. He was also part of the Junior IIHF in 2020 and 2021.
Why did the Bruins Pick him up?
Along with his achievements, he is a proven, very good goal scorer. During his time in Buffalo, he had a total of 65 goals and 83 assists from 2021-2025. Though he dipped down to a total of 25 goals with the Mammoth, that is still better than most of the Bruins this last season. Both he and Viktor Arvidsson made 25 goals, respectively, but only three Bruins players scored more than 25 goals in the 25-26 season.
Those top three players are Morgan Geekie, Pavel Zacha, and David Pastrnak. The Bruins have learned to build up strong defence and fairly good offence over time. With the addition of Peterka to the roster, fans are hoping that he will help with goal-scoring for the team, getting the team closer to succeeding in the playoffs.
