Again, it's no secret that the Boston Bruins had some rather big needs going into the offseason after they were bounced in six games by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in May.
One of the areas was addressed by general manager Don Sweeney when he acquired right wing JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth for two first-round draft picks. However, the need for a top-six center and a right-shot defenseman has not been addressed. They reportedly tried to acquire defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers, but that deal reportedly fell through back on July 1.
As far as the top-six center goes, that is going to be a topic for a long time until it is addressed by Sweeney. Expecting that to be addressed before the 2026-27 season begins continues to be unlikely. One quote from Sweeney earlier that was a subtle quote at the time should get more attention when it comes to adding a pivot.
Bruins heading down the road of not addressing the top-six center need
When it comes to the center position, the Bruins currently have Pavel Zacha, Elias Lindholm, Fraser Minten, and Sean Kuraly scheduled to come back. They also have James Hagens in the wings, who played wing, and even Morgan Geekie, who can slide into the middle when needed during games. That didn't go lost on Sweeney.
“I mean, our centers, by committee, have done a good job. We’ve actually had players playing on the wing that, when we have injuries, can move into the middle of the ice … so we’re fortunate in that regard,” Sweeney said back in June, according to Jack Studley of Boston Hockey Now.
So reading that quote over and over makes me begin to believe that addressing the need for a pivot in the top six might not actually be something the Bruins will look at this summer. There have been rumors about moving Zacha in a deal to fill a bigger need, but trading him for another need doesn't make sense. Why subtract a player that could fill a current need for a player that fills another need.
Moving Zacha, unless for a better player, doesn't make the most sense in the world. The more you read Sweeney's quote earlier this offseason, the more you think that help up the middle isn't coming this summer. That would be unfortunate.
