David Pastrnak has never complained about the opportunities he's been given personally since joining the Boston Bruins. Sure, the talent on the other three lines might not have been enough to surround him. But he's always been surrounded by some of the organization’s best players, spending most of his career with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron and getting stints with one of his heroes growing up, David Krejci.
Pastrnak made sure to let management know after the Bruins' first-round loss to the Buffalo Sabres last season that he wanted to see more talent in the organization, and they fulfilled that request by acquiring JJ Peterka. Despite starting training camp on seperate lines, the skilled Europeans are now on the opposite flanks of Elias Lindholm, and it could open up a whole new world of opportunities for Pastrnak.
Peterka plays at a high pace, something neither Bergeron, Marchand, nor especially Krejci ever did. Marchand had flashes of speed in some of his best moments, but overall, he plays at a measured pace. Pastrnak has never really had someone who plays the game with reckless abandon, and we saw why giving him that can be so effective in the third period on Tuesday night.

When Pastrnak has someone who plays fast, forechecks hard, and backs up defenders with their speed, it lets the superstar play at the pace he is most comfortable with. He doesn’t have to speed up to match Peterka, and he isn't quick enough to do so anyway, but his hockey sense operates at that pace, similar to how Krejci played the game.
Peterka can be the motor, while Pastrnak can find open space and be ready for any scoring opportunities Peterka sends his way. If he doesn't want to shoot all the time, which is likely, as we know, his new linemate loves to play the give-and-go game, which should keep defenders and goaltenders honest. It's really a perfect match if they can make it work and get offense through the rest of the lineup.
David Pastrnak thrived in this environment before
While the Bruins couldn't get Pastrnak this element before, we've seen it work internationally. One of the most exciting connections to watch at the World Championships is Pastrnak and Martin Necas, which is why he was such a valued trade target for fans before the Colorado Avalanche acquired him.
That isn't to take a shot at the front office for not giving Pastrnak what he needs to succeed. As previously stated, he has done just fine with his linemates and is lucky to have gotten the opportunities he has. Players with dynamic speed like Peterka and Necas aren't always available, but the Bruins are lucky to have finally gotten exactly what they need.
It was just a single period against a skeleton crew for the Philadelphia Flyers, but the pair did enough for Marco Sturm to give them another look at practice the next day. The Bruins have likely found the connection they were looking for when they acquired Peterka, and that is great news for fans of Pastrnak and the organization.
