When the Boston Bruins acquired JJ Peterka minutes before the 2026 Entry Draft in Buffalo for a pair of first-round draft picks, it was a trade that opened some eyes. General manager Don Sweeney was hoping to find lightning in a bottle with the former Buffalo Sabres draft pick after what many saw as a down season with the Utah Mammoth in 2025-26.

However, like acquiring Pavel Zacha from the New Jersey Devils a few years ago and signing Morgan Geekie as a free agent a few summers ago, Boston was hoping to have Peterka find his game. He has been slotted in on the first line with David Pastrnak and Elias Lindholm, and even though it's been just two games, but the returns have been good.

How good? Well, after Peterka's overtime winner against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night, he's quickly opening some eyes in his own locker room.

Peterka wasted little time in scoring his first goal as a member of the Black and Gold in the season-opening 3-0 win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night with an electric goal where he made a move on defenseman Braden Schneider between his legs to score on a mini breakaway.

Friday night, late in overtime, Pastrnak collected a turnover from the Boston defensive end and broke in a 2-on-1 with Peterka. The speed Peterka showed coming through center ice was impressive, and it led to him scoring for a 4-3 win on a nice pass at the blue line from Pastrnak. After two games with Boston, defenseman Hampus Lindholm is glad Peterka is on his side, not facing him on the other team.

"It’s almost like he smells blood when he sees half a breakaway. I’ve never seen someone so fast, and he obviously knows how to finish it off,” Hampus Lindholm said, per Belle Fraser of BostonBruins.com. “People don’t understand how hard it is what he does. We’re glad to have him on our side.”

Essentially, when it comes to the roster construction over the offseason, Peterka replaced Viktor Arvidsson, who left for the Detroit Red Wings in free agency. However, the early returns have been promising not only with Peterka's skill, but his speed, which was one display against the Jets.

There is a lot of hockey left in the season, but so far the returns have been better than some might have thought. Hopefully that continues as the season goes along.
