When Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney decided to have a fire sale at the 2025 trade deadline, it didn't come as a surprise to many. However, some of the players he moved were a surprise when the dust settled.

Sweeney traded defenseman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche. Those were the two biggest names moved, but right before the 3 p.m. EST trade deadline, there was one more deal that dropped some jaws around Boston and the NHL: Brad Marchand.

The Bruins sent their captain to the Florida Panthers, of all teams, in exchange for a first-round draft pick. Marchand made an immediate impact in South Florida, playing a big role in Florida capturing their second straight Stanley Cup championship. He re-signed with the Panthers following that season to close out his career in Florida.

He has dealt with injuries during his short time with his new club, and he is beginning his second full season with the Panthers in 2026-27. He missed training camp after surgery, but he made his season debut on Florida's season-opening four-game road trip, which included three games out West. In the trip's final game on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings, Marchand suffered what appears to be a significant injury.

Late in the second period of a 1-1 game in Southern California on Tuesday night, Marchand drove toward the net, and his left leg bent awkwardly after he crashed into the right post of LA's net. He was down in pain and needed help getting from two teammates getting off the ice, with two teammates not putting pressure on his left leg. He was seen holding his knee right after going down.

There was no update after the game from the Panthers, who are flying home after the game to open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday night against the Minnesota Wild. It will likely be a couple of days before an update is officially announced by the team or head coach Paul Maurice.

In two games this season, Marchand has one goal, after scoring 27 last season in 52 games for the Panthers in 2025-26 with 27 assists. After missing the playoffs last season and dealing with numerous injuries, Florida loaded up their roster this offseason with depth, and it will be needed after they also lost Aleksander Barkov on the trip against the San Jose Sharks, he will be out six to eight weeks.
