With each passing day, the Dylan Larkin rumors are going around on social media like an out-of-control wildfire. A lot of teams have been mentioned, and one team that continues to be mentioned, but is not on Larkin's trade list, is the Boston Bruins.
If Larkin were willing to add the Bruins to his list of teams, it feels like general manager Don Sweeney would really push to get a deal done. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on his latest 32 Thoughts podcast gave an update, and he brought up the Black and Gold.
"I've heard they've (Boston) tried to get in on this,'' Friedman said.
It's not surprising that the Bruins would be kicking the tires with the Detroit Red Wings for Larkin. However, before we get to a potential return, Friedman laid out why Boston and Sweeney would be looking to acquire Larkin to their current roster.
"The way Boston's going, they don't lose right now. They're at a .719 points percentage. They're second in the Eastern Conference, and their goal differential is plus-20. It's the second-best in the conference, and it's actually the second-best in the league. Mike Babcock always said that. He says what's the true stat to look at? He said goal differential. Right now, no surprise, Carolina is number one at plus-24, but Boston's excellent.''
What would a Bruins trade for Dylan Larkin look like with the Red Wings?
It is widely known that Fraser Minten and James Hagens are off limits when it comes to a starting point in a trade. That is the correct decision. There is no need to even consider trading either one of them.
Now, some realistic names to consider are Pavel Zacha; there is an opportunity to offload Zacha by making him part of the trade. Defenseman Mason Lohrei? He could easily be thrown into a deal, as he was rumored to be part of the return package to the Calgary Flames for defenseman Rasmus Andersson. It never ended up materializing.
Now, there is going to be a lot more going back. Does Sweeney include a prospect like Dean Letourneau or Will Zellers? This might be the time for Sweeney to cash in on some first-round draft picks that he has.
Sometimes, where there is smoke, there is fire. Is Boston a legit threat to get Larkin? That would only become a reality if he adds them to his list and expands it, but Friedman laid out why Larkin might be willing to consider a trade to the Black and Gold. It's not a bad option right now.
