This would make total sense.

On Thursday, it was announced by the NHL that the Boston Bruins were going to take part in the NHL Global Series in 2027. The two games will be played in Germany and will be on the 2027-28 NHL schedule. When it was announced, there was no opponent, dates, or times listed. However, Bruins beat reporter Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub reported who the Black and Gold opponent will be.

According to Anderson, the Bruins will play the Edmonton Oilers in Munich, which, in the overall big picture, makes the most sense. Two NHL teams with strong ties to Germany are currently on both teams' rosters.

Bruins are reportedly to face the Oilers in Germany

Boston and Edmonton are a no-brainer matchup on multiple levels for the NHL to expand the game in Germany. The ties between both teams were too much where the matchups make too much sense.

“The 2027 NHL Global Series games in Germany present an incredible opportunity for the Bruins organization to build on our longstanding connection with fans around the world,” Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs said in a team-issued statement. “We look forward to representing the Bruins and the city of Boston at one of the National Hockey League’s marquee events and engaging with our passionate fanbase in Munich, across Germany and beyond.”

As far as the Bruins go, head coach Marco Sturm will lead his team to his home country for two games. Currently, the Black and Gold have two players from Germany on their roster: forwards Lukas Reichel and JJ Peterka. Reichel is under contract for the upcoming season, but Peterka is signed long-term after being acquired by the Utah Mammoth right before the Entry Draft back in June.

Peterka is a big addition to the Black and Gold, and having him have a breakout season would be big in 2026-27. However, looking ahead to the games in Germany, the Oilers have maybe the biggest named draw in their potential matchups: Leon Draisaitl.

One of the more prolific scorers in the NHL, he's teamed with Connor McDavid. He has 434 career goals going into the 2026-27 season in 855 career games. A first-round pick of Edmonton in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Draisaitl played in five games in the 2026 Winter Olympics with two goals and five assists. He averaged nearly 25 minutes a game in the Olympics.

The NHL is expected to announce the official matchup at a later date.
