When it comes to the Boston Bruins front office and the fanbase, they rarely see eye-to-eye. A lot of the fans' frustration is aimed at general manager Don Sweeney and president Cam Neely. It has been that way for years and isn't going to change anytime soon.
Heading into the 2025-26 season, the Black and Gold were coming off one of the worst regular seasons in a long time in Boston. They were a couple of points out of a playoff spot when Sweeney decided to have a fire sale at the trade deadline in March of 2025. Gone were several key players.
Sweeney traded Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche, Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers, and Justin Brazeau to the Minnesota Wild. The returns in some of the deals were worth the trades, and some, well, not so much.
However, the Black and Gold stunned a lot of people around the NHL by sneaking into the Eastern Conference playoffs last spring by finishing with the first wild-card spot in the East. They were bounced in six games by the Buffalo Sabres, but huge progress was made. Despite that success, it's clear that Bruins fans are not happy with Sweeney and Neely still.
Bruins front office moves up, but remains in the bottom half of the rankings
Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic ranked the Bruins' front office at No. 23, up seven spots from last season, but still in the bottom half of the NHL. In the overall big picture, it's surprising where they're ranked, but another season in this upcoming campaign that shows more regression, and they could fall further back, and it might even cause some heads to roll in the front office. Well, maybe.
"Whether the Bruins can turn this retool around an elite core into a legit contender is the big test, though, and for now they look well off the mark. That’s what keeps them in the league’s bottom half, even by the more optimistic public,'' wrote Luszczyszyn.
Nowadays, overreaction can cause overreaction to what reality actually is. That might be the case with fans and the front office going into this season. There were several needs this offseason, but Sweeney has only addressed one of them: acquiring JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth. There were rumors that the Black and Gold were trying to acquire defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers before it reportedly fell through. There is still a rather dire need for a top-six center, but that is a need that they'll be needing for a long time, it appears.
The frustration between the Bruins fans and the front office is something that will always be there. Whether or not Sweeney and Neely are there. If things go off the rails in 2026-27, and it could, with the rest of the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference getting better- things could get interesting this winter in Boston.
