After opening the season with a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday at TD Garden, the Boston Bruins were back on the ice on Thursday at Warrior Ice Arena after a well-earned day off on Wednesday.
Getting ready for a two-game road trip, which is a back-to-back against the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild, beginning on Friday night in Canada. At practice on Thursday, it appears that Marco Sturm is going to run out the same lineup against the Jets, based on the lines. However, out on the ice for the first time in over a week was youngster Matthew Poitras, who is beginning the season on injured reserve.
After practice, Sturm gave an update on the second-round pick by the Black and Gold in the 2022 Entry Draft, and it appears that we'll have to wait to see him make his season debut.
Marco Sturm gives Matthew Poitras update following Wednesday practice
Will he travel on the upcoming road trip? Dturm didn't say yes or now, but but with it being a two games trip and both games played in a 24-hour span, it's up in the air.
“Usually one practice won’t do it for me, and he’s been out for 7 days plus or something like that, so he needs reps, and unfortunately we don’t really practice on the road because it’s a back-to-back,'' said Sturm, per Bridgette Proulx of WEEI.
That doesn't sound like someone hopping on a plane and taking a couple of flights over the weekend. There won't be any practices and likely just a game-day skate on Friday in Winnipeg. There won't be one on Saturday in Minnesota before Saturday night's game against the Wild. Keeping him behind to skate and work out at Warrior Ice Arena before his teammates come home.
How did Poitras feel?
“He feels fine today, we’re going to crank it up again the next day, and the next day, and the next day, until we feel like he’s ready to go and he’s going to give us everything he has to crack the lineup and also stay in the lineup,'' said Sturm.
There is no doubt that he's going to get an opportunity to stay in the lineup once he gets a shot. Part of keeping him was that he would need waivers to get to the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL), and he probably wouldn't make it through. You get the feeling that there's a chance he'll crack the lineup potentially next week during a three-game homestand beginning on Monday night against the Ottawa Senators. The good news is he's getting close, and competition is a good thing in the NHL.
