Training camp is here for the Boston Bruins, with off-ice testing being done on Wednesday and the first on-ice workout happening Thursday. There are a lot of questions surrounding Boston in 2026-27 as camp opens and one fo them was surrounding prospect Matthew Poitras.
Last week, the 22-year-old was on the ice at Warrior Ice Arena for captains' practices despite not having a contract as a restricted free agent. Being in town and one the ice without a contract was telling leading into the official start of training camp. On Wednesday morning, all the questions surrounding the second round pick of the 2022 Entry Draft were answered with a new contract.
Bruins sign Matthew Poitras ahead of training camp
There is no general manager who looks like he plays hardball with prospects when it comes to new contracts more than Don Sweeney. Boston announced that it signed Poitras to a one-year, two-way contract for $850,000. Let's be honest, this is a deal that could have been done over the summer, but waiting until mid-September is certainly a decision. It likely wasn't one that sat well with Poitras, nor should it have.
During his time with the Black and Gold, Poitras has played in 69 regular-season NHL games with seven goals and 20 assists. He only played in three games last season as he spent the season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins. He had 13 goals and 31 assists last winter in the AHL.
Where he fits into the plans for the 2026-27 season, that remains to be seen. However, with him now officially under contract, he will be another body fighting for a spot in the top-nine forward grouping. Along with James Hagens, a lot of eyes are going to be on the younger players of the Black and Gold and whether or not there are going to be enough roster spots to go around.
Along with Poitras and Hagens, forwards Alex Steeves, Mikey Eyssimont, Lukas Reichel, and others are going to be battling for a roster spot. All are likely going to get a chance to show what they can do in some preseason games. There are four games beginning on Sunday that will last through late next week before the final roster cutdown happens with the season opener on Sept. 29 against the New York Rangers at TD Garden. Where will Poitras be at the end of the month? That's going to be a fascinating question to answer.
