Nearly everything that could have gone right has gone right for the Boston Bruins early in the 2026-27 season. Aside from a pair of back-to-back regulation losses to the Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators, the Bruins hace picked up at least one point in every other game.

However, have all the performances been perfect? No. Have they had to find different ways to win games? Yes. That's what good teams do. Maybe, just maybe, the Black and Gold are a good team. Saturday night at the TD Garden against the San Jose Sharks, Boston was tied 2-2 through two periods. What happened in the third period was impressive, securing a ninth win on the young season. What did head coach Marco Sturm learn after his team scored four goals in the final period for a 6-4 victory?

"Good teams always find a way to win. That's what I take out of this game,'' said Sturm to Andy Brickley of NESN right after the win, completing a season sweep for the Sharks.

Bruins pick up a win when they didn't have their best effort

Despite scoring early again on a Casey Mittlestadt goal, as the game went on, you could tell that the Bruins didn't have their "A game" against San Jose. Their passes were off, and their skating game wasn't what it was like in their 6-0 win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night at home. Not even close.

They took too many penalties again, and the Sharks took advantage with two power-play goals. Aside from a Fraser Minten third-period power-play goal, the Bruins' man advantage struggled. We've seen that before this year, haven't we?

However, trailing 3-2 with just under 12 minutes remaining, David Pastrnak tied the game when he came out of the penalty box and buried a wrist shot on a 3-on-2 to tie the game. Forty seconds later, James Hagens poked home a loose puck in the crease for a 4-3 lead. Minten's power-play goal just under three minutes later made it 5-3 with eight minutes left.

For a team that prides itself on its defensive system, that should have been enough, right? Not on this night. Will Smith cut the deficit to 5-4 just 27 seconds after Minten extended the lead, but defenseman Will Borgen sealed the win with 28 seconds left with an empty-net goal, his second empty-net goal against San Jose in 10 days.

The Bruins were not at their best. Even goalie Jeremy Swayman wasn't at his best at times. However, on nights like that, good teams find a way to win. That's what the Black and Gold did.
