Three games into the 2026-27 NHL season, second-year Boston Bruins coach Marco Sturm has played the same forward groupings against the New York Rangers, Winnipeg Jets, and Minnesota Wild.
You really can't blame Sturm for sticking with the same lineup given how well they have played. However, one veteran forward who made the roster out of training camp and has yet to find his way into the lineup is Mikey Eyssimont. He played well in the preseason, but with Matthew Poitras on injured reserve to begin the season after suffering a setback in training camp.
He was back on the ice last week before the Black and Gold hit the road for a two-game trip against the Jets and Wild. It sounds like he is getting close to making a potential return to the lineup. On Sunday, did the Bruins hint that he is closer than some think by placing Eyssimont on waivers?
Cleared Eyssimont (BOS) & Giles (SJ) on waivers
October 4, 2026 " target="_blank">According to Elliotte FriedmanBruins place Mikey Eyssimont on waivers on Sunday
Placing Eyssimont on waivers means there is a move or two coming. General manager Don Sweeney is hoping that someone will take Eyssimont off his hands, but that is unlikely. Who knows? Maybe someone will, but we'll see.
Last season, in his first season in Boston, Eyssimont played in 56 games in the regular season with eight goals and 10 assists. He only played in two of the six games in the first-round playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres.
The problem with Poitras is that once he comes back, if he doesn't play well enough to earn a stay, they look to send him to the AHL; he'll need waivers himself to clear and get there. He would never make it through, as he would get claimed. Losing Eyssimont instead of Poitras for nothing is a better outcome for Boston.
Eyssimont is on the roster as the extra forward because Poitras is on injured reserve. Sturm has made it clear that Poitras is going to get a chance to play. That means a move would need to be made, and placing Eyssimont on waivers is the move to make now; it would be even better if someone claims him. We'll know by 2 p.m. EST on Monday.
