Training camp begins this week for the Boston Bruins. There won't be much time for second-year head coach Marco Sturm to figure things out when it comes to putting together a roster for Opening Night against the New York Rangers on Sept. 29.
Aside from who will and won't make the roster, Sturm also must figure out what his lines are going to look like and his power-play units. One player who should fit seamlessly into the lineup is forward JJ Peterka. Acquired from the Utah Mammoth in June, the Bruins are going to need him to contribute offensively. Sturm, in speaking with Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, is likely going to play Peterka on both wings.
“But we’ve talked, and he’ll play either side, he doesn’t care,” said Sturm. “And the power play, we’ll see. I do know he hits it a ton when coming downhill.”
Boston's power play got stale last year after the Olympic Break after teams began focusing more on David Pastrnak. Adding someone like Peterka to the power play unit should help raise production this year.
TSN ranks Charlie McAvoy a top 50 player in the NHL
The NHL Network has been ranking the top 50 players in the NHL leading up to the regular season, and a Boston Bruins defenseman was ranked just inside the top 50. TSN is also ranking the top 50 players; they released their list of players 41-50, and McAvoy made the cut.
TSN ranked McAvoy the 46th-best player entering the upcoming season. You have to think that when they release more of their list, David Pastrnak will end up there somewhere.

- The Montreal Canadiens made news over the weekend when they signed forward Chris Kreider in free agency, a player the Black and Gold were interested in adding. On Monday, they gave an extension to head coach Martin St. Louis. It's not surprising, given how well they did last year and will be one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference in 2026-27.
- Another team in the Atlantic Division, the Buffalo Sabres, announced that they signed Noah Ostlund to an eight-year extension with an AAV of $6.6 million. Buffalo locks up a key piece of their future.
- Sean McIndoe of The Athletic did an Eastern Conference Bizarro-meter from the offseason, and the Bruins were, well, disappointing. The only major move was acquiring Peterka, with their strangest story being acquiring Will Borgen from the New York Rangers and signing Connor Clifton to return on defense. Yes, Sean, it was a disappointing offseason for Bruins fans.
