When it comes to fantasy football, the season is right around the corner and heating up. NFL teams have completed at least their first preseason game, and before you know it, early next month, the 2026 NFL season will be kicking off. So will a lot of fantasy leagues.
As for NHL fantasy games, there are some leagues, but they are not as big as the NFL leagues. However, some die-hard hockey fans will play and select some of the top players from across the NHL to be on their team. CBS Sports released the top 100 fantasy players for the upcoming season, and two members of the Boston Bruins made the list.
Corey Abbott of CBS Sports ranked the top 100 fantasy players that fans should consider drafting, and David Pastrnak came in at No. 6, and Morgan Geekie was No. 78. It is understandable that Pastrnak is there and should be a lock to be picked within the first 10 picks, but Geekie is more of a later-round pick, as there could be some regression in 2026-27. NHL fantasy drafts are coming up sooner rather than later for the new 84-game season.
Bruins writer drops top 5 Calder Trophy candidates for 2026-27 season
One of the hotter topics throughout the NHL season is who is and isn't a Calder Trophy candidate as the season winds down. This season, the Bruins are hoping to get their name in there with the seventh overall pick in the 2025 Entry Draft, James Hagens. Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe dropped his top 5 preseason candidates, and Hagens wasn't mentioned.
In alphabetical order, Dupont listed Anton Frondell of the Chicago Blackhawks, Cole Hutson of the Washington Capitals, Porter Martone of the Philadelphia Flyers, Gavin McKenna of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Ivar Stenberg of the San Jose Sharks. Those are some very good candidates, but Boston needs Hagens to get into the conversation as the season goes along to prove that they nailed the pick inside the top 10 and have a player who can contribute for years to come.
Matthew Poitras remains unsigned
Training camp begins next month, and it is one day away from beginning at Warrior Ice Arena. If it were scheduled to begin today, then the Black and Gold would be without youngster Matthew Poitras, who remains a free agent.

There is still time to work out a deal, but you get the feeling that with each passing day, it becomes more and more concerning that something isn't done. This feels like a big season for Poitras and the Bruins in terms of where he fits in not only this upcoming season but also beyond. If he doesn't fit into the plans for 2026-27 and beyond, then maybe cutting ties and trading him is a route that general manager Don Sweeney might have to seriously consider. Where not there yet, but we might be getting closer and closer to that becoming a realistic possibility.
