Through four games of the 2026-27 NHL season, the Boston Bruins are 2-2-0 after winning their first two and losing their last two games. It has been an up-and-down rollercoaster ride, to say the least.
They remain one big giant question going into the season, and it will remain that way for a while. They looked good in their first two games, but not in their last two. However, everything may not be all that bad with the latest Power Rankings from Bleacher Report, which doesn't paint as bad a picture as might be thought.
Bruins receive surprising power ranking from Bleacher Report
Lyle Fitzsimmons of Bleacher Report released his latest Power Rankings and he had the Black and Gold at No. 20, which is actually up one spot from last week.
"We'll always have the first couple of days of the season, right? That may be the mindset of Boston fans after the Bruins won their first two games but have since dropped consecutive 4-1 decisions at Minnesota and at home against Ottawa,'' Fitzsimmons wrote.
A deeper dive into Fitzsimmons' power rankings shows that the schedule through the first four games for the Bruins has been tougher than some thought it might have been before the puck dropped on the season. The two teams Boston has beaten are the New York Rangers and the Winnipeg Jets at ranked fifth and seventh, respectively.
How about the two teams that they lost to: the Minnesota Wild and the Ottawa Senators? They are ranked second and third, respectively. All four opponents are currently in the Top 7, with the Utah Mammoth, Thursday night's opponents at TD Garden, coming in at No. 8.
Make no mistake about it, this Bruins team is flawed. Some issues need to be ironed out by head coach Marco Sturm, including fixing the struggling power play. As well as finding some line combinations that can find some offense at even strength. Easier said than done with the makeup of the roster.
The Bruins still haven't had the services of defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who has two games remaining on his six-game suspension to begin the season. Is he going to fix the issues the Black and Gold have? Unlikely, as he won't surprise the offense needed or close a lot of the gaps on the backend of the Bruins' defense in front of their goalies.
There are two more games over the next three days at the TD Garden against Utah and the Philadelphia Flyers. After that, a West Coast trip that includes a stop against the Dallas Stars awaits the Bruins. A difficult October will get tougher, and if they don't fix some holes, they could find themsleves closer ot the bottom of the league and power rankings before long.
