Boston Bruins: Brad Marchand Sets Franchise Scoring Record
On February 14th 1953, Fleming Mackell scored a goal for the Boston Bruins just nine seconds into the game. That franchise mark has held on through multiple generations, but that all came to an end on Sunday Februrary 14th, 2016. Exactly 63 years after Fleming Mackell set the record, Brad Marchand beat it by a hair, scoring eight seconds into the Bruins’ matinee game against the Detroit Red Wings.

The NHL record for fastest-goal scored in a game is five seconds with Doug Small setting the record on December 20th back in 1981. Since then, Bryan Trottier and Alexander Mogilny have tied the record on March 22nd, 1984 and December 21st, 1991 respectively. While Brad Marchand wasn’t able to break the all-time record, any future Boston Bruins player will be hard-pressed to beat Marchand’s franchise record any time soon.
Puck Prose
It isn’t surprising that Brad Marchand took a shot so quickly into the game with his recent goal-scoring streak taking the NHL by storm. Entering Sunday’s game against the Red Wings, Brad Marchand had 27 goals on the season including 12 goals in his last 12 games, only failing to score in one of those 12. With a still-hot-hand, Brad Marchand managed to get a shot off in the offensive zone after an early icing call against the Red Wings, scoring for the 13th time in his last 13 games.
Across Marchand’s last 13 games, he has recorded 13 goals and four assists for 17 points, failing to record a point in just one throughout that stretch. Marchand has been very efficient in those games as well in other areas as well, recording 10 hits, two blocked shots, and taking 51 shots on net.

Brad Marchand now has 28 goals on the season, matching his career-high total that he marked in 76 games in the 2011-12 season, just his second in the NHL. Brad Marchand is in his sixth season in the NHL now, and with only 51 games played on the season, and 26 still on the schedule, Brad Marchand is showing no signs of slowing down.

With the Atlantic Division, and the entire Eastern Conference remaining so tight in terms of points, the Bruins’ will need Brad Marchand to keep his elite level of play up for the remainder of the season. While it’s unreasonable to expect him to record a point, or score in every single game for the rest of the way, he will need to play hard and avoid slumps leading up to the playoffs.
