Last Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Ice Arena, 24 hours before the Boston Bruins began training camp, general manager Don Sweeney and head coach Marco Sturm met with the media. After each provided an opening statement and before the floor was opened up to questions, Sweeney took the mic back and announced the one thing fans have been waiting for: there will be a captain for the 2026-27 season.
The answer was yes.
However, both declined to name that player, and they would before Opening Night on Sept. 29 against the New York Rangers at TD Garden. Who knows when they are going to announce it, but it appears that the English Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur may have done it for them.

The X account for Tottenham Hotspur posted player Xavi Simons in Boston, and wrote that he was exchanging jerseys with Bruins captain David Pastrnak, while also visiting with Boston Celtics superstar Jason Tatum.

Now, I'm not sure when the Bruins were planning on announcing that Pastrnak was going to be their next captain, and if he is, leave it to Sweeney and the front office to botch the announcement and let someone else make it for them. Honestly, unless this was their plan all along and Pastrnak is indeed going to be their captain, then what an embarrassing way for it to break.
Boston is scheduled to host the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night at TD Garden in their second preseason game out of four, and Pastrnak is slated to be in the lineup. Now, you can bet that, with social media seeing this, cameras are going to be zooming in on Pastrnak's jersey to see if there is indeed a "C" on it.
Who knows, maybe there will be, but it would be foolish for the Bruins to ignore the post and deny anything going forward if Pastrnak is going to be wearing the "C", joining two of his former linemates, Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, in wearing the letter on the front of their jerseys.
When the dust settles, if Pastrnak is named the next captain of the Boston Bruins, it'll be the least surprising announcement by the organization in a long, long time. It is the predicted outcome by nearly all fans. However, if the club does some quick damage control and announces it anytime before tonight's game, then you know that the front office and organization were caught off guard by the social media post by Tottenham Hotspur.
