The Boston Bruins have some interesting decisions to make before the start of the 2026-27 season. They are coming off a successful season, where they were beat out of the first round by the Buffalo Sabres. Now, as we head into the 2026-27 season, there are some big questions that need answers, like what the future holds for Casey Mittlestadt. Who will likely be suiting up for a new club if the organization elects to re-sign Pavel Zacha?
Zacha has proven to be a better fit within the Bruins’ top six, especially alongside star forward David Pastrnak. Oftentimes, players get paid just for their chemistry with the team's star player. And, unfortunately, Mittelstadt just didn’t click with Pastrnak as well as Zacha did. With the emergence of Fraser Minten, there really isn’t any place for Mittelstadt and his $5.7 million cap hit.
Casey Mittelstadt looks to be on his way out of Boston
Acquired from the Colorado Avalanche at the 2024 trade deadline before signing a three-year extension carrying a $5.75 million cap hit, Mittelstadt was envisioned as a key transitional piece for Boston's top nine. However, with his contract entering his final year before he hits unrestricted free agency in 2027, his long-term fit with the franchise is reaching a critical inflection point.
Mittelstadt offers undeniable playmaking ability and middle-six flexibility, especially with top prospect James Hagens and the addition of J.J. Peterka. Boston’s forward group is undergoing a youthful pivot. Paying nearly $6 million for a middle-six center who could walk for nothing next summer creates an organizational risk Sweeney may not want to take.
Moving Mittelstadt before training camp accomplishes two major objectives for the front office. Financially, wiping his $5.75 million cap hit off the books instantly opens up operational space for Sweeney to continue to add down the road. Secondly, it clears vital ice time for Hagens, Minten, and Marat Khusnutdinov to continue their development within the top six.Â
There is a very good chance that Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins will keep Mittelstadt heading into training camp. They may decide to keep him and flip him at the trade deadline for another middle-six forward or for futures, depending on how well their 2026-27 season goes. However, as always, a trade can happen at any moment, and if Mittelstadt doesn’t impress at training camp, he risks being shipped out of Boston before opening night.Â
