Marco Sturm drops honest quote after Bruins' improbable rally and win over Blackhawks

This was an understatement after a third-period come-from-behind win over Chicago.

Trailing the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2, with seven minutes left at the TD Garden on Saturday afternoon, the Boston Bruins were looking at a third straight regulation loss in five days after back-to-back losses to the Carolina Hurricanes and St. Louis Blues on the road Tuesday and Thursday last week.

Boston couldn't afford a third straight loss given how good the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division are this season. A long losing streak in regulation without collecting any points could be a setback that some teams might not be able to overcome. However, losing at home in regulation to the Blackhawks would be rather devastating in terms of the standings come the spring. However, the B lack and Gold dug deep and picked up not one, but two points in the standings in a game that maybe they shouldn't have collected any.

Trailing 4-2 late in the game, Mason Lohrei cut the deficit to 4-3. Then, in the final seconds, Morgan Geekie, who had just one goal going into the game so far in 2026-27, ripped a slap shot to the back of the net to tie the game 4-4, with 12 seconds left. Just like that, one point secured. Elias Lindholm completed the comeback in the extra session by burying the game-winner for a 5-4 victory. Second-year head coach Marco Sturm didn't mince words after the game about getting two points.

Sturm said what all Boston fans were thinking: his club was lucky to get two points in the standings, not just one, on an afternoon when his club probably didn't deserve any.

“I’ll take the points, right?” said Sturm, per Boston Bruins.com. “I know we didn’t play our best but I’ll take the points. We’ll talk about it (Sunday) what we have to get better at but great comeback from our guys, being down … and coming back and then winning in OT, I’ll take that any day.”

Sure, any coach would take that any day, but let's be real, that's three straight games where the Black and Gold didn't play anywhere near the way they want to. Chicago put together their best 60-minute effort of the season, but still couldn't close the deal in the end.

One thing that goes unnoticed was Sturm not calling a timeout late in the game after the Blackhawks' icing. Instead of drawing up a play and giving the Chicago players time to rest, he let it play out and was rewarded for the decision. Two points instead of none.
