Going into the offseason after being bounced in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Buffalo Sabres last spring, one thing was clear when it came to the Boston Bruins: changes were coming. Team President Cam Neely and general manager Don Sweeney made it clear that the roster that qualified for the postseason was, well, not good enough.

That was the truth. However, when it comes to Sweeney and the Bruins' front office, it is easier said than done that changes are going to be made that are for the best. I know, we're not breaking any news here. Before free agency struck, which was an underwhelming class in terms of fixing some of Boston's needs, Sweeney struck a trade that nobody saw coming. Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report graded some of the biggest offseason trades one month into the season, and well, unsurprisingly, he gave the Bruins a high grade for acquiring JJ Peterka.

Bruins get high grade for JJ Peterka trade amid strong start to 2026-27 season

Minutes before the 2026 NHL Entry Draft in June in Buffalo, Sweeney traded a pair of first-round draft picks to the Utah Mammoth for Peterka. It just happens that his former GM with the Sabres, Kevyn Adams, is now in Boston assisting Sweeney. However, in 12 games so far this season, he has had four goals and nine points, which is just what the Black and Gold need. Yerdon gave the Bruins an "A" as a grade for the trade, one month into his first season with Boston.

"J-J Peterka's arrival in Boston via trade with Utah got him back on the East Coast and playing for fellow German in head coach Marco Sturm. That combination of elements as well as Peterka providing a speed and skill to the Bruins lineup is paying off early on,'' wrote Yerdon.

He's not wrong. Maybe one of the biggest winners to date has been David Pastrnak. Peterka brings an element of speed that the Bruins have been missing in their top six. Just like Viktor Arvidsson last year, before he bolted for the Detroit Red Wings in free agency over the summer. The results have not been what a lot of fans had hoped with Peterka and Pastrnak on the first line with Pavel Zacha, but things are slowly clicking, and there have been flashes of what could be lately.

As for Peterka, he has been knocking on the door of a 30-goal season, and many believe that he might finally get it in Boston. If he does, and he does it this season, then what a trade this will end up being for Sweeney. Right now, Yerdon believes it's been the best offseason trade in the NHL, one month into the season.
