We are a week away from the Boston Bruins hitting the ice at Warrior Ice Arena for training camp. There are questions surrounding some players with camp approaching in terms of contracts for players who are entering the final year of their and even one player who is still unsigned.
On Tuesday, the Bruins announced that they extended young center Fraser Minten with a seven-year contract that carries an AAV of $7.2 million. As for Matthew Poitras, he remains unsigned, and the closer we get to camp, the more it appears that he just might not sign before then.
Corey Pronman of The Athletic listed 11 intriguing players who could hit the wire during preseason, and Poitras was listed. If that's how Boston ends up losing Poitras - if they even do at all- losing him through waivers would be a stunning development, to say the least.

Pronman listed Poitras as a player who could be lost on waivers this training camp. That would be a stunning development in itself if they lost him that way.
"Poitras is very skilled and intelligent. He makes a lot of difficult plays with the puck and can run a pro power play. He can create off the edge, while also showing no fear of attacking the inside despite his 5-foot-11 frame. Poitras doesn’t have the typical athleticism of an NHL forward, though. On top of his frame, he lacks NHL foot speed and isn’t overly physical. He has played NHL games and has NHL skill, but seems like more of a depth forward without adding more elements to his game,'' wrote Pronman.
This is going to end one of two ways between the Bruins and Poitras: either with a contract, or he's going to be traded. He is not the type of player that Sweeney is going to just put on waivers and lose for nothing. That would be as close to a fireable offense as there is.
It is really anyone's guess as to why Poitras remains unsigned. Whether it's the player or the organization, someone is playing hardball and not willing to budge. There is also one thing that hangs over this in terms of where Poitras fits in with the Black and Gold in the lineup this upcoming season. There is an overload of bottom-six forwards that are on the roster, and it remains to be seen, when the dust settles, who makes the roster and who doesn't, but losing Poitras through waivers is a very unlikely scenario.
