After breaking training camp on the roster with the Boston Bruins, forward Mikey Eyssimont was placed on waivers after a couple of games into the season for assignment to the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL). He cleared and reported to first-year head coach Trent Whifield.
Sometimes, when a veteran gets sent down to the AHL, like Eyssimont, they don't handle it well and sometimes don't go all-in when they get down. It's understandable for someone like Eyssimont, a veteran of the league, to all of a sudden lose his role on an NHL club. However, the writing was on the wall last season, with him being a healthy scratch at times.
Eyssimont has gone down and been a true professional and is being rewarded for it.
Bruins coach Marco Sturm explains why Mikey Eyssimont got the recall from the AHL
Eyssimont's path back to Boston was via an injury, and that's what happened on Saturday morning. Boston announced that they were placing rookie James Hagens on injured reserve, and the corresponding move was to recall Eyssimont from the P-Bruins. After practice at Warrior Ice Arena on Saturday, Sturm explained Eyssimont deserved teh recall.
“Yeah, no, he definitely deserved a call-up, let’s put it that way,'' said Sturm, per BostonBruins.com. "We really liked him, actually, at training camp. He was really good, if you guys remember too; he had a really good camp. But we had a lot of bodies, and I guess he continued his play in training camp into the minors. Was really good, too. He didn’t pout or anything. He worked really hard, and that’s why he deserved the call-up.”
Last season was Eyssimont's first in Boston after signing a two-year deal, and in 56 games, he had eight goals and 10 assists. The eight goals were the second-most he scored in a season after he potted a career-high 11 in 2023-24 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Eyssimont has been very good for Whitfield and the P-Bruins since going down last month. In fact, he's been so good that he received AHL Player of the Month honors for October. He had a third-period hat trick on Friday night in a 5-4 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs. Now, he's on a flight to Boston to be some insurance should another injury occur.
Eyssimont is someone who could generate some interest in the trade market for a team looking for depth in their lineup. Maybe this could be a showcase should he crack the lineup at some point.
