Max Guenette got a chance to get some run with the big club on Tuesday night when the Boston Bruins faced off with the Philadelphia Flyers in their second preseason game. He paired with roster hopeful Frederic Brunet and played a solid game thanks to his young partner. However, the chances of Guenette making the team were slim to none coming into camp, and he'll now get a chance to claim his spot on the Providence Bruins' blue line after being placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment.

The former seventh-round pick of the Ottawa Senators isn't a candidate to get a claim put on him at this point in the preseason, which means he'll bring some minors experience to the AHL team. It will be his fifth season in a league where he has shown some offensive flash, recording 140 points in 282 games. He was also Belleville's AHL All Star Game representative in the 2023-24 season.
Guenette played with a largely NHL roster on Tuesday against Philadelphia, and unfortunately it drew a line in the sand of which league he belongs in. While the rest of the Bruins' blue line, including Brunet, looked like they belonged on the Garden ice, there were some moments in Guenette's game where you could see why he wasn't going to challenge for a spot on the NHL roster.
While he did show some activation in the offensive zone, it was the Flyers' lone goal from Jacob Gaucher that exposed the lone AHL defenseman on the Bruins' roster. With Guenette on his heels and Brunet unable to get over to help, Gaucher took the defender wide, used his body to shield the puck, and made him look like a non-factor in the play.

Guenette could prove to be a depth defenseman on the Bruins' depth chart if they get into some injury trouble. However, with Jordan Harris, Jonathan Aspirot, and Henri Jokiharju potentially being on the outside looking in once Charlie McAvoy returns to the lineup, it would take an unfortunate number of injuries or a couple of trades for Guenette to get the call.
In the maentime, fans can wait and see if the AHL experience will help him be an asset for a Providence team that hasn't been able to get over the playoff hump the past few seasons despite some regular season success.
