Time is quickly closing in on the Boston Bruins when it comes to cuts and who is and who isn't going to be around next Tuesday night when they open the season at home against the New York Rangers at the TD Garden on Sept. 29.
On Sunday, the Black and Gold started to make some moves, placing forward Narvin Mutter on waivers. On Monday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Mutter cleared waivers, and now he's likely headed to the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL).
It's not surprising that he cleared waivers, but there could be some very interesting decisions coming up for the Bruins in terms of cuts and players needing waivers to get to the AHL. Mainly, Matthew Poitras and Frederic Brunet need to get through waivers, and neither is a given to get there. As for Mutter, he was acquired from the Nashville Predators last March for prospects Dalton Bancroft and Massimo Rizzo, neither of whom is still with the Preds.
Providence Bruins announce training camp roster
The P-Bruins opened up their first training camp under first-year head coach Trent Whitfield on Monday, just hours after releasing their initial roster. Whitfield and his staff will be getting some additions from Marco Sturm's camp in the not-too-distant future.
Providence announced its roster with the following players: forwards Ben Allison, Maxim Andreev, Robert Cronin, Wyllum Deveaux, Cross Hanas, Ryan McGuire, Nolan Renwick, Ryan Tattle, and Antonio Venuto. The defensemen are Jack Bar, Jaxon Bellamy, Dylan MacKinnon, and Chris Ortiz. Providence has a pair of preseason games on Friday and Saturday against the Springfield Thunderbirds in a home-and-home. Again, there will be more reinforcements coming from Boston before those games.
Marco Sturm explains why James Hagens was sent out first in the shootout
After a scoreless overtime that saw the Bruins kill two penalties against the Washington Capitals on Sunday night at the TD Garden in their first preseason game, of course, it had to go to a shootout. When it was Boston's turn to shoot, Marco Sturm sent out James Hagens first. He ended up scoring the only goal of the shootout when he beat Cap netminder Logan Thomspn between the pads. Why did Sturm send out Hagens?
“I don’t know if you guys watched the scrimmage yesterday. He did the same move, so he tried it again,” Sturm said. “Good for him.”
Hagens looked good against Washington and proved he's NHL-ready. Hopefully the Bruins see it the same way.
