They don't how you scored, just if you scored.
One Boston Bruins prospect doesn't have to explain how, just that he did score.
In one of the more bizarre credited goals you'll ever see, the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League have a goalie goal. No, we're not kidding. It happened on Saturday night and it is the weirdest and luckiest thing you'll ever see.
Providence Bruins goalie Simon Zajicek credited with an empty-net goalie goal
The P-Bruins were hosting the Charlotte Checkers in an Amercian League Hockey (AHL) game on Saturday night in Rhode Island and were leading 4-2 late when Charlotte decided to pull their goalie early, chasing two goals.
As expected, after pulling their goalie, the Checkers were applying a lot of pressure on Providence in the offensive end. Simon Zajicek made a save, and the puck went to a Checkers player behind the P-Bruins net. A centering pass split the Charlotte defensemen and rolled all the way down into the Checkers' net with 3:11 left in the game for a 5-2 Providence lead.

Again, they don't ask how, but if. Zajicek got credit for the goal, and he will forever be in the Providence record books with his first career goal. You can bet he'll be shooting some pucks at an empty net this upcoming week in practice.
Goalie goals are not new this year. Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers scored earlier this season against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Madison Square Garden. However, he was lost for the season last week with an injury, a devastating blow for New York and coach Mike Sullivan.
Goalie goals are nothing new to the Bruins organization. In February of 2023, during the Black and Gold's record-setting regular season, Linus Ullmark scored a goalie goal in a win over the Vancouver Canucks when he hit the open net from his own end. Since then, Jeremy Swayman has been trying and looking for one, but in the overall big picture, there is a time and place to try it. As much as Swayman tries, you get the feeling that he'll score one before his career his over.
As for Zajicek, he is getting a shot in Providence this season with Michael DiPietro backing up Swayman in Boston. Those are some big shoes to fill after the last two seasons DiPietro had, being one of the top netminders in the AHL. However, Zajicek has a leg up on bragging rights with a goal credited to his stats.
