Going into training camp, there is a logjam at some positions for the Boston Bruins. Especially on defense, with a slew of blueliners. Some of that might have to do with Charlie McAvoy being suspended for the first six games of the upcoming season.
However, there are several players at other positions, and there is a logjam brewing with the forward grouping, mainly the bottom-six forwards. Eventually, some movement within the roster is going to have to happen either before, during, or after training camp. With that said, here are three players who could be shipped out sooner rather than later to create some openings on the roster.
3 Bruins who should be traded before training camp
Mason Lohrei
There has been just too much smoke surrounding Mason Lohrei in trade rumors over the last year, and something feels like it'll get done sooner rather than later, no? The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, which carries an AAV of $3.2 million. He'll be a restricted free agent at the next of the 2027 season.
Several teams would be lining up to acquire Lohrei, and a change of scenery just might be what he needs. He is a candidate to play on his offside, which the Bruins have done with him. A team looking to add an offensive defenseman who can quarterback the power play could look to add him. Sweeney just won't give him away, but trading him to address a need makes too much sense.
Henri Jokiharju
It has been said before and needs to be said again. Acquiring Henri Jokiharju from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline in March of 2025 made sense. What didn't make sense was re-signing him for three years at an AAV of $3 million. Talk about liking a do-over.
It is less than ideal to have a defenseman projected to be making $3 million a year and be a healthy scratch for a second straight year in about half of the games. As a right-shot, if anything, it might make sense to keep him as McAvoy sits the first six games, but beyond that, there really isn't a lot of sense in keeping him if he's just going to be a healthy scratch half the season.
Mikey Eyssimont
The case could be made that clearing out some bodies in the bottom six makes total sense for the Bruins if they want to add young players like Matthew Poitras and James Hagens. Easier said than done. One player who could be moved to a team looking for a bottom-six grinder is Mikey Eyssimont. He signed a two-year deal last summer with an AAV of $1.45 million. It's not about the money, more about the roster spot when it comes to moving the former Stanley Cup champ with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
