4 takeaways from the Boston Bruins win over the Vancouver Canucks

45-8-5. Six straight wins. The Boston Bruins are back to dominating everyone once again. Following a Thursday night win against the Seattle Kraken, the Bruins rolled into Vancouver on Saturday and improved to 2-0 on their latest road trip with a 3-1 victory.

With that, it’s takeaway time!

Power play gaining traction?

The first goal of Saturday’s action came courtesy of Hampus Lindholm, who unleashed a rocket of a one timer in the first period on the power play, the seventh goal of the season for the left shot defenseman.

Maybe, just maybe, the Bruins power play is starting to gain some traction. In the current six game winning streak, the Bruins have scored on the power play in three of those games. There’s still work to be done to improve, but it’s a good sign for a unit that was struggling mightily.

The new guys debut

Saturday marked the debut of defenseman Dmitry Orlov and right wing Garnet Hathaway after being acquired from the Washington Capitals on Thursday. Connor Clifton came out of the lineup to make room for Orlov, with AJ Greer taking a seat for Hathaway.

Hathaway, playing on the 4th line alongside Nick Foligno and the returning Tomas Nosek, registered two hits in 11:40 of ice time on the night, while Orlov had one shot on goal, one blocked shot, and two hits in 20:04 of ice time alongside Derek Forbort on the 3rd defense pairing. All in all, a solid debut for the two newcomers.

Brad Marchand, stay hot

With his 19th goal of the season with 35 seconds to go in the first period, number 63 continued a recent hot streak. The goal ran his current point streak to five games, dating back to the win in Nashville. In his point streak, Marchand has three goals and three assists.

Linus Ullmark, we are unworthy

There is so much to talk about when it comes to Ullmark this time around. First off, Ullmark made 26 saves on 27 Vancouver shots, recording a .963 save percentage to bring his season save percentage to .938, still leading the league.

Next up, the win that Ullmark got moved him to a 30-4-1 on the season, making him the first goalie in the league to reach 30 wins on the year. That’s pretty good if you ask me.

Last and best, he SCORED A GOAL. Yes, that’s right, we were treated to a goalie goal. With less than a minute left, Ullmark took the 200 foot shot just to the side of his net, nailing the shot to seal the win. He became the first Bruins goalie to score a goal, celebrating by doing the skate past the bench after scoring. No pressure Jeremy Swayman, but we need you to score now.
