When the Boston Bruins signed Jack Ahcan to a two-year entry-level contract, the move was met with a lot of excitement. He was coming off an impressive collegiate career at St. Cloud State and had tallied 103 points in 144 games. In his first pro season, the Minnesota native did not disappoint. The 24-year-olds impact was on full display in the AHL as he lived up to expectations.

In 19 games for the Providence Bruins, Ahcan had ten points. While he was only able to score one goal, he did record nine assists. The St. Cloud product finished with the second most assists and points of any defenseman on the Providence roster. Only Brady Lyle, who appeared in 25 games, had more, but Ahcan’s impressive play earned him a promotion to the NHL.

During his first stint with Boston, Ahcan did not record a point but was solid defensively. The left-shot defenseman landed two hits and blocked five shots. Ahcan also showed that he wouldn’t back down from a challenge and didn’t seem flustered by the raised pressure. His play allowed the Bruins to rest some of their key players heading into the playoffs.

Additionally, Ahcan averaged a total ice time of 20:38 against the Capitals and Sabres. In those games, he attempted seven shots, five of which landed on the net. For the Bruins, it was a promising glimpse of the future as they entered a critical offseason.

When training camp begins, Ahcan will be looking to secure a spot on the NHL roster. He took the AHL by storm last year with his puck-moving ability. He also proved to be a responsible defensive player, which was on display at the NHL level. That will be a vital trait in his second professional season.

Regardless of where Ahcan begins next season, he showed some positive signs in 2021. His offensive skills at college translated well to the professional level. His opportunities in the NHL, however, will depend on what moves the Bruins make. In the playoffs, their lack of depth was exposed when Kevan Miller and Brandon Carlo suffered injuries.
