So far this season, the Boston Bruins‘ depth has been tested. Tuukka Rask has missed time due to injury, and Jaroslav Halak was recently placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. In their absence, the Bruins have had to rely on prospects Dan Vladar and Jeremy Swayman. While the Bruins rookies have impressed, Swayman has started the last two games and dazzled.
Before being called up, Swayman had only appeared in nine games for Providence. In his limited action, he posted a 1.89 goals-against average (GAA) and a .933 save percentage. In his starts, Providence went 8-1-0 as he showed why he is such a highly regarded prospect. In the NHL, the former fourth-round pick has been just as good.
In two starts for the Bruins, Swayman has faced 75 shots and allowed four goals. In both starts, he has made thirty-plus saves and looked comfortable in the NHL. With Swayman in net, the Bruins have won two straight and are in the midst of their first win streak since mid-March. Through 120 minutes of game action, the Bruins’ prospect has come as advertised.
Additionally, Swayman hasn’t been phased by the increased pressure in the NHL. In the Bruins’ victory on Thursday, the Capitals scored two powerplay goals in a 21-second span. The rookie netminder was able to recover and did not allow a goal for the rest of the game. In his first two games, the Anchorage native’s poise is one quality that has stood out above the rest.
Over the last few weeks, the B’s have gotten a preview of the future with Vladar and Swayman in net. Both Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak will be free agents in the summer. The Bruins’ rookie tandem has showed that they are ready for an increased role at a crucial point of the season.
On Saturday afternoon Swayman will make his third consecutive start. It will also be the second time he has faced the Flyers in a five-day span. He will be looking to continue his impressive play in what has been an unforgettable start to his pro career.
