The Boston Bruins finally got some offensive help Saturday afternoon as they were able to put up seven goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, the B’s also were terrible defensively as they allowed five goals.

While Boston being able to score seven goals is nice, allowing five is concerning. Additionally, it’s not very encouraging with who scored the goals, as the B’s really didn’t get secondary scoring as they so desperately need.

Many fans will see the score of this game and think the Black and Gold don’t need to make a trade for another scorer to be a legitimate cup contender. However, this game proved even more that Boston does need another scorer.

This game also exemplified Boston’s need for another left-shot defenseman. Jeremy Lauzon was a healthy scratch on Saturday because he has been struggling lately. The B’s need another solid option to give their young, inexperienced defensemen much-needed breaks, and this game proved it.

The Boston Bruins still desperately need another scorer and left-shot defenseman.

Boston finally broke out offensively on Saturday! They must’ve gotten secondary scoring, right?

Wrong.

The B’s managed to score seven goals against Pittsburgh on Saturday. While this is great, it’s also concerning when looking at who scored the goals.

Six of the Black and Gold’s seven goals were scored by their top scorers. Brad Marchand recorded a hat trick, David Pastrnak scored two goals, and Patrice Bergeron also had one.

The only goal that wasn’t scored by either Pasta, Marchand, or Bergeron was David Krejci’s powerplay goal. But this further proves my point as this goal was a powerplay goal, not even strength.

I find this extremely concerning as Marchy and Pasta won’t always be able to score multiple goals a game or even one goal a game. Boston needs to make a move to bring in another legitimate scorer to make them a real threat to win the Stanley Cup.

Along with scoring seven, the Black and Gold also let up five. While the B’s have been pretty solid defensively this season, they have also had games where they haven’t played well in their own zone, like Saturday.

Most of these games are caused because normal defensemen are out due to injury or because at least one of the young, inexperienced defensemen aren’t playing well.

Yesterday was a bit of both these factors as the pairing of Jarred Tinordi and Connor Clifton were a combined -3 and the team was without Jeremy Lauzon (healthy scratch) and Brandon Carlo (upper-body injury).

Lauzon was a healthy scratch because he has been struggling as of late. So head coach Bruce Cassidy decided to give him a night off. With Lauzon and Carlo out, Tinordi and Clifton both had to play as Kevan Miller is still out with his knee injury.

So, along with another scorer, the B’s need to go out and get another left-shot defenseman that can either replace or split time with one of the young defensemen.

Next. Boston Bruins should try and trade Halak before the Trade Deadline. dark

I’m not going to argue which one is more important to get, as this topic is extremely debatable and just based one whether you value offense or defense more. However, I do know that the Bruins do need both and need to make a move soon to stay in a playoff spot and to be consider an actual threat for the cup.
