Over the last few weeks, the Boston Bruins have struggled offensively. As the Bruins have been struck with injuries, they have only scored more than two goals in a game twice this month. One player, however, who has been a bright spot is  Matt Grzelcyk. The Bruins defenseman has battled injuries this season but is making an impact offensively of late. As Boston looks to climb in the standings, Grzelcyk will be hoping to continue his current trend.

In 15 games this season, the Charlestown native has one goal and eight assists. Although Grzelcyk has missed 13 games, he has the second most point among Boston defensemen. The 27-year-old has also been highly effective on the power play, where he has five points. Grzyelcyk’s best stretch of the season, however, has come this month.

Over the Bruins’ last six games, Grzelcyk has five points including his first goal of the season. The former third-round pick has been more aggressive in the offensive zone and provided the Bruins with a boost as they’ve won consecutive games for the first time in a month.

Additionally, over the Bruins’ last three games, Grzelcyk has attempted 17 shots. Entering the season, the Bruins wanted their defenseman to be more aggressive offensively, and he has done exactly that. His five powerplay points also lead all B’s defensemen.

With the season nearly halfway over, Grzelcyk is on pace to match his numbers from 2019-2020. In 68 games last year, he had four goals and 17 assists, both of which were career highs. After a slow start, he has been able to replicate his success from last year.

Since returning to the lineup on March 3 after missing four games, Grzelcyk’s quick puck movement has been on full display. During that span, the B’s have also looked better as they have outscored their opponents 6-3. With Brandon Carlo injured, Grzelcyk has spent most of his time Boston’s top defensive pair to boost the offense. So far, he has stepped up to the challenge.

As the Bruins look to continue their recent success, Grzelcyk will be a key piece. The former third-round pick is one of the Bruins’ most important players and has proved his value of late. If he can continue his recent stretch, it could be a big year for the Charlestown native.
