After a nightmarish two-game stretch, the Boston Bruins got back in the win column Sunday afternoon. In Boston’s 4-1 win, their secondary scoring came alive, and Tuukka Rask had his best start of the season. Trent Frederic also scored his second career goal on a tip in front of the net. As the Bruins got back on track, Frederic had one of his best games of the year. In his third NHL season, the former first-round pick is becoming a key part of the B’s success.

Entering 2021, Frederic had appeared in 17 NHL games and did not have a point. The Wisconsin product was known for his physical style of play and willingness to drop the gloves. So far this season, however, he has shown that there is much more to his game.

Through 18 games this season, the St. Louis native has two goals and one assist. Frederic has attempted 37 shots which is more than in his two previous NHL stints combined. While he has been more aggressive in the offensive zone, he has been solid defensively.

In the first two months of the season, Frederic has landed 29 hits and blocked four shots. The B’s center is also spending less time in the penalty box. Unlike in the past, he has not had to rely on fighting to make an impact. He also hasn’t backed down from any challenge and has been noticeably vocal when on the ice.

On Sunday afternoon, Frederic came through in the clutch as his goal proved to be the game-winner. On the play, he got in front of the net and put himself in a position to change the direction of Connor Clifton’s shot. With the Bruins in need of secondary scoring, Frederic has stepped up in the Bruins’ last four games; he has two goals.

Although Frederic only has three points, he has been one of the Bruins’ most consistent players. He has also served as an enforcer when the Bruins have needed a spark. Coming into the season, the 23-year-old had a lot to prove. Through the Bruins’ first 18 games, he has carved out a role on the third line and rewarded the Bruins’ patience.

As the B’s look to continue their success, Frederic’s growth will be something to keep an eye on. Although the season is far from over, Frederic’s improved play has been one of the Bruins’ top storylines.
