Through the first month of the 2021 season, the Boston Bruins have been one of hockey’s best teams. They have only lost once in regulation and have the second-most points in the NHL. One big factor in their success has been the play of Patrice Bergeron.

The veteran center was named Captain in the offseason and is off to one of the best starts of his career. As the Bruins hope to continue their hot start, Bergeron’s play will be a key to their success.

In 61 games last year, Bergeron had 31 goals and 25 assists. Although he was a productive piece, his 25 assists were his lowest since the 2012-13 campaign. In 2021 he already has nearly half that total just 12 games into the season.

So far this year, Bergeron has six goals and 10 assists. The former second-round pick is currently tied for first in points and assists on the Bruins. He is second in goals as he trails Brad Marchand by two. The veteran center also has one shorthanded point, which matches his total from last year.

Additionally, Bergeron has been a force on special teams. This season, the Quebec native has nine points on the man advantage. Four of his six goals have come on the power play as the Bruins have the NHL’s third-best power play unit. Just like in years past, Bergeron has excelled regardless of the situation.

Furthermore, in 2021 Bergeron has continued to have a flair for the dramatics. The Bruins center has one game-winning goal and had an assist on Brad Marchand’s overtime winner on Wednesday night. It was the second point that Bergeron has in overtime this season.

The Bruins struggled in overtime last year, but in 2021 Bergeron and others have changed the narrative so far this season.

Bergeron’s hot start also has him on the verge of history. Through 1,101 career games, Bergeron has 888 points. He needs only four more to pass Bobby Orr for fifth in franchise history and 11 to pass Rick Middleton for fourth. It could be a historic next few weeks for the veteran center as he continues to rewrite in the franchise record books.

Although the season has only just begun, Bergeron is on pace to have one of the best seasons of his career. The Bruins top line is also fully healthy and has combined for 40 points so far in 2021.

The season is far from over, but it could be a special year for the Bruins captain.
