Checking in on Bruins’ Prospects in College

The Boston Bruins have some prospects hitting the halfway point of their 2020-21 college hockey season. Let’s take a look at how they are fairing in this unique season.

Johnny Beecher

A sophomore at the University of Michigan, Beecher has four goals and three assists in 14 games for the 10-6 Wolverines. The 30th selection in the first round of the 2019 Entry Draft was one of the final cuts in December from Team USA World Junior Championship team training camp in Plymouth, Michigan.

The 20-year-old was part of Team USA in 2020 at the WJC and was to serve a one-game suspension this season if he made the team for a hit in his final game the previous year. Beecher, however, was left off the roster as he tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the final round of cuts.

Jack Becker

A teammate of Beecher’s at the University of Michigan, the Bruins selected Becker, a center and left wing, 195th overall in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. This season, the senior has one goal and four assists in 15 games for the Wolverines this winter.

Michigan is beginning a two-week break as the athletic department is having a COVID-19 outbreak. All sports are shutting down for 14 days. The Wolverines are currently in second place in the Big Ten Conference.

Dustyn McFaul

A sophomore at Clarkson University, McFaul is having a solid season for the Golden Knights. He has three assists in 15 games, but has a plus-6 on defense.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2018 draft, McFaul has missed the last three games with an injury for the 9-6-3 Golden Knights.

Trevor Kuntar

Drafted in the Bruins’ most recent draft class selection in October, Kuntar is fitting in fine for Boston College and producing in his freshman season. He has five goals and three assists in 12 games for the No. 1 team in the country.

Playing left wing on the Eagles third line, Kuntar, who was selected 89th overall in the third round, also has a plus-4. BC is 9-2-1 and lost to the University of Connecticut Friday night in a shootout, before beating the Huskies Saturday, 4-2.

Quinn Olson

Selected 92nd in the third round of the 2019 draft, Olson has one goal and five assists in 15 games for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs (8-5-2) are coming off a weekend sweep of Western Michigan University in a National Collegiate Hockey Conference two-game series.

The sophomore forward from Calgary, Alberta had an impressive freshman season in 2019-20 with seven goals and eight assists. Minnesota-Duluth will travel to Oxford, Ohio next weekend for a series with Miami (Ohio) University.

Unfortunately for Curtis Hall, his season was canceled when Yale University and the Ivy League opted out of the season because of safety concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Hall, picked 119th in the fourth round of the 2018 draft, had a team-high 17 goals as a sophomore last season.
