Brendan Gaunce leaves game against Laval after dirty hit

Providence dropped last Friday’s game against Laval, but the final score wasn’t the major outcome of the game. Rather, a key injury turned out to be the biggest outcome.

Brendan Gaunce left the game with a head injury after a dirty hit from Michael McCarron.

McCarron hit Gaunce right in the head in open ice. There’s really no other way around it; this was an extremely dangerous hit that looked like an obvious penalty and suspension. McCarron caught Gaunce in a vulnerable position but did not let up.

The referees for whatever reason didn’t give McCarron a penalty, but the AHL did suspend him for two games.

The medical staff diagnosed Gaunce with a concussion and a broken nose. He did not travel with the team and missed the next two games.

Gaunce, given his first round pedigree, is an intriguing player in the Bruins organization. He had a decent game and looked good in the first few games for Providence. Hopefully he can make a full recovery and get back on the ice soon.
