What’s up with the Charlie McAvoy deal; it seems like his new deal is closer than ever. For the Boston Bruins – that’s great news.

Here we go. The Boston Bruins commence training camp on Thursday; the players hitting the ice on Friday. Hopefully, Charlie McAvoy will be among them.

The status of a deal keeps bouncing back-and-forth day-to-day. On one day, nothing is imminent and then on the other, the deal is done. As the regular season approaches, all teams are trying to get their restricted free agents signed and ready for action.

The same applies to the Boston Bruins and their attempts to get Charlie McAvoy deal done. Sooner rather than later.

More from Rumors

A Charlie McAvoy deal never seemed closer. At least that’s the impression we all get. On Monday, Zach Werenski signed a three-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets worth $5 million per season. Is that a comparable for the Charlie McAvoy new deal? The closest one you can get.

However, there are some differences. The structure of Werenski’s contract is based on the fact, that in the third and final year of his new deal, he will get $7 million.

If he signs a one-year contract worth exactly $7 million per that campaign, he will be automatically carried to un-restricted free agency in 2023. In 2023, Charlie McAvoy by comparison, would still be a restricted free agent.

Besides, McAvoy seems to be a better overall defenseman than Werenski. However, his health issues are always in the back of your mind.

The Boston Bruins front office thinks that Werenski’s deal will start the domino effect. “I have no time frame on when a deal will be done,” Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney said in an interview with The Athletic (subscription required).

“I’ve said all along that I believe we’ll find a deal at some point. I’ve also said I’d rather it be sooner than later. I’m not going to change my stance on that.”

The next guy right to Werenski and McAvoy in the restricted free agent defensemen pool is Ivan Provorov. The Philadelphia Flyers defenseman is another comparable player to McAvoy; although McAvoy seems to have a bigger upside, Provorov is very reliable and also scores some points. Last season wasn’t his best, for sure.

As per reports from Philadelphia, the Flyers are working on a six-year deal with Provorov. That means a long-term one and if Provorov signs first, McAvoy and his agent have nothing to wait for, they won’t get any further comparables.

Bob McKenzie thinks that Charlie McAvoy is more inclined towards a long-term deal. Nothing imminent, per him, but the talks will surely heat up in the upcoming days.

To sum this up, the Charlie McAvoy deal has never been closer as it is right now. After Werenski signed, there are just two big young defensemen left – McAvoy and Provorov. If Provorov is next to ink a new contract, only the 21-year-old Boston Bruins blue-liner would be left.

Presently, there is no way that Charlie McAvoy should not start the Boston Bruins opening game against the Dallas Stars on October 3. At least that’s the impression we get.
