One more point in Game 7 would move Torey Krug alongside Bobby Orr for the most points by a Boston Bruins defenseman in the Stanley Cup Final. Pretty decent company for the 28 year old to hold!

Whilst he would require a seven point night to match the most by a Boston Bruins defeseman across the whole of the post-season (Ray Bourque‘s 25 points in 1991), Torey Krug could move alongside Bobby Orr with 7 points in the Stanley Cup Final.

Orr accomplished the feat in the losing effort to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and holds the franchise record of 8 points in the 1972 series against the New York Rangers.

Perhaps the more surprising part of all of this is that Torey Krug rates only as a secondary mention when we start discussing nominees for the Conn Smythe Trophy. He has his goaltender, Tuukka Rask to thank for that.

More from History

The way that Krug has performed this post-season would likely have had him solidly in the running, but instead the Boston Bruins netminder has single-handedly kept his team in the hunt on more than a few occasions. Of course the defense, Krug included, deserve somewhat of a mention in there too.

Maybe it’s the fact that the 28 year-old had been here before and is one of the few Boston Bruins players that have been to a Stanley Cup Final and don’t have a ring to show for it. Maybe it’s because his first child is due within days of Game 7. It could well be any number of things spurring Torey Krug to greater heights, but whatever it is, it’s massively to Boston’s advantage.

As a player of incredibly short stature, especially when you put him alongside the Boston Bruins captain, Zdeno Chara, you could be forgiven for expecting him to lay low and not have a physical element to his game. His helmet-less hit has already found it’s way into Bruins folklore with memes comparing it to ‘that’ Bobby Orr goal!

His best performance this whole play-offs came in Game 3 with a goal and 3 assists marking a 4 point night and seeing the chance of matching Orr’s record become a real possibility. The past two games have been point-per-game performances for the Minnesota native and it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that he breaks out on the power play with a further couple of points.

Next. Is home ice actually a disadvantage?. dark

If anyone in the Boston Bruins locker room is going to want to win this Game 7 tonight, it’s Torey Krug. He’s been to the Stanley Cup Final before but doesn’t have the ring to show for it. Tonight isn’t just about a chance at a personal accomplishment, it’s a chance to right a wrong, at least in his eyes.
