It’s already been a rough start when it comes to the Boston Bruins and the injury bug. Now, it appears to have gotten a little worse.

The Boston Bruins were without several players as they were soundly beaten by the Minnesota Wild. While the Bruins were without both their goaltenders (Tuukka Rask and Anton Khudobin), another player’s absence was keenly felt. Bruins forward David Backes had been listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed upper body injury.
David Backes has had surgery on his elbow to remove an olecranon bursa. In essence, it is a fluid-filled sac that cushions parts of the body where friction is likely to occur. They are usually found in areas between two bones, between a tendon or ligament and a bone, and between bone and skin. The surgery was relatively minor.
Backes is slated to be out for the next two games. He’ll miss tonight’s game against the New York Rangers and the upcoming road game against the Detroit Red Wings. In a press release issued by Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney, Backes’ condition will be updated after the weekend. Backes was the big free agent signing of the Bruins this year. So far, he has four points (two goals) in his five games with Boston.
To counter the loss of David Backes, the Boston Bruins have recalled forward Austin Czarnik back to Boston. Czarnik already has two NHL games under his belt where he ended up with a -3 rating and one shot on goal.
