Boston Bruins Sign Christian Ehrhoff to PTO

With the regular season creeping closer with each passing day, the Boston Bruins have the same concerns they did last year. A faulty defense that looks almost identical to that of their opening night roster last season is still in need of a revamping. According to TSN Insider Bob McKenzie, however, the Bruins might be looking to add some extra experience – at least for the preseason.

As McKenzie reported, Christian Ehrhoff is heading to Boston on a PTO. Professional tryouts are a good way for teams to gauge where players in their career are without any formal commitments. Ehrhoff is coming off of a loss in the finals of the World Cup of Hockey with Team Europe. It’s clear that he is hungry for a new NHL job.

A veteran of 789 regular season games, Ehrhoff most recently played with the Chicago Blackhawks after being acquired from the Los Angeles Kings last year. While Ehrhoff is no longer the same defenseman that will post 30-50 points each season as he did in his prime, he’s still got something to offer an NHL club.

Heading into the final game of the World Cup of Hockey, Ehrhoff averaged 13:56 of ice time each night. His defensive partner was veteran defender and current Philadelphia Flyer Mark Streit for Europe. He also led all European defensemen with three assists and sported a team-best plus-2 rating. In addition to that impressive showing, Ehrhoff also posted a team-high four blocked shots in game one of the WCoH finals; a testament to his ability to put his body on the line for his team.

“Once the tournament is over I’m going to talk to my agent, and we’re going to figure out the next step,” Ehrhoff said prior to the final game of the World Cup. “Right now my focus is solely on Team Europe.”

Consequently, one day after Team Canada won the tournament, Ehrhoff is now joining the Bruins on a PTO. At the tournament, Ehrhoff played with Bruins captain Zdeno Chara. While Ehrhoff didn’t skate on the same pairing as Chara, the fact that they played on the same team in the tournament is a good thing as it could help Ehrhoff ease in with the team.
