Boston Bruins Sign Peter Mueller to PTO After Stint in Sweden
According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Boston Bruins have signed former first-round pick Peter Mueller to a professional tryout offer (PTO).
After being selected with the eighth overall selection in The 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Mueller has had a disappointing career. Despite his projections to be a top-six, offensive force who had the size to be a physical entity on the ice, injuries limited Mueller’s production over his career. Across a five-year NHL career (including the lockout-shortened 2013-14 season) Mueller played in 297 of a possible 376 games. In that time, he scored 63 goals and 160 points.

After failing to catch on with an NHL team prior to the 2013-14 season Mueller took his talents to Switzerland. In 49 games with Kloten HC in the Swiss-A league, Mueller scored 24 goals and 46 points. After an impressive showing overseas, Mueller attempted a comeback with the St. Louis Blues, ultimately failing to catch on there either.
Mueller returned to the Swiss-A league again in the 2014-15 season where he scored just 10 goals and 17 points in 34 games. Last season, Mueller played in 43 games with Malmo of the Swedish Hockey League. He managed to score 13 goals and 25 points in that time.
Will he Catch on in Boston?
The Bruins may or may not sign Mueller to a contract out of training camp. Still, Mueller has legitimate NHL size and good offensive instincts. Despite this, the 28-year-old is probably being seen as an extra body to bring to camp who could push other players. Mueller may be competing with the Bruins on a PTO, but he will be showcasing his talent to all 30 teams in that time.

Boston could use some extra offense in their lineup following the departure of Loui Eriksson this offseason. Mueller however, probably isn’t the answer. Any draft projections for Mueller that took place in 2006 are no longer valid in the discussion. His failure to stay healthy and perform at a top-six level, however, still is.
