Boston Bruins forward Jimmy Hayes may be in very hot water with the B’s front office, local media, and the fans.

There is an interesting (and ugly) rumor floating around the Boston media. The rumor suggests that Boston Bruins forward Jimmy Hayes had an active role in talking Jimmy Vesey out of signing with the Black and Gold. The prospect of an active-contract player trying to talk someone out of playing for their team(and making an immediate positive impact) is a disturbing thought.

Last season, Jimmy Hayes earned the media’s wrath (in this case, rightly so) for having an under-achieving season. His 29 point (13 goal) season was considered to be underwhelming.  Earning the wrath of the Boston media is a bad thing for a professional athlete.

Boston media does enjoy tearing down players they don’t like. Phil Kessel, Tim Thomas, Tyler Seguin, and Dougie Hamilton are among recent former Bruins who were eviscerated in the press in recent years.  Some were chewed out for non-ice issues. Others were lit up due to perceived (or even imaginary) issues.

Jimmy Hayes has had a rough go of it with the local media and the fans. He hasn’t lived up to the billing of being a big, physical player. He had the worst plus/minus on the team last year, and wasn’t the two-way player the Bruins were hoping he could be. This rumor will only make the fans’ perception of him worse.

Comcast New England was one of the first sources to leak this rumor openly.

The Hayes family is close with the Vesey family. Jimmy Hayes (or someone in his family) could have talked to Vesey about the pressure of playing in front of your hometown crowd. The conversation could have been entirely innocent and meant it more as a cautionary tale than an indictment against the Boston Bruins.

If this conversation happened, it could have been nothing more than two friends discussing Vesey’s upcoming NHL career.

I’m sure the Boston Bruins front office has already had a discussion about this.  Someone from the front office has probably already called Hayes to ask about this.

Now, it’s all up to Don Sweeney. If the Boston Bruins general manager discovers this (or perceives it) to be true, Hayes’ time in Boston will come to a quick end.
