The Boston Bruins will have several players that will miss opening night. Bruins forward David Krejci and defenseman Torey Krug underwent surgeries in the offseason. Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney was pressed about their status at the end of development camp, and he stated that both had been “doing very well”.
“Both doing very well,” said Sweeney. “I see Torey pretty regularly because he’s been around all summer. David just went down to Carolina for a few weeks.
“ rehab has gone very well. He’s got it set up down there for a little bit but he’s popping back up. Our doctors, our medical staff, they’re very comfortable where both those players are at in their rehab process.”
David Krejci is now 30 years old. His surgery on April 25 was to repair injuries sustained through the 2015-16 season. In his nine-year NHL career, Krejci has had surgery on both hips. There has been a certain level of talk regarding a possible Krejci trade this season. Any trade talk will be just academic until Krejci plays his first two dozen or so games.
Krejci’s surgery will likely cause him to miss the World Cup. Krejci’s absence at the World Cup will deprive the Czech Republic national team of a solid forward.
Torey Krug had an operation on April 21 to repair his shoulder after last season. The 25-year old defensemen had just finished his first season as a full-season top-four blueliner. Krug will be taking on more responsibility this season, and will hopefully be back by the end of October.
Krug had a strong season for the Bruins last year. He finished with 44 points for the Black and Gold. While his scoring production was limited at jut four goals, his 40 assists put him in the top ten in the NHL for assists by a defenseman.
