After receiving back-to-back one year contract extensions with the Boston Bruins, Torey Krug has finally received a long-term commitment from the club. The 5 foot 9, Michigan Native went undrafted and has played with a chip on his shoulder ever since. The Bruins took a chance on the Michigan State University commit, however, and his contributions to the team have proved worth the investment for the team so far.
Krug’s goal-scoring is his strongest asset. In his first five games in the NHL — coming in the 2013 playoffs against the New York Rangers — Krug scored a goal in four out of five games. In his first regular season at the NHL level, the young defenseman managed to score 14 goals, proving that he wasn’t a fluke. In the following season, he scored 12 goals, but ultimately saw his goal-scoring production drop off to just four goals this past season.
While Krug did post a career-low in goals, it’s important to acknowledge that he reached a career high in points with 44, and showed drastic improvements on the defensive side of the puck. Based on Krug’s HERO Chart from this past season compared to Sami Vatanen’s, courtesy of Own The Puck, Krug was a very positive player for the Bruins last year.
Next: Bruins Buy-Out Dennis Seidenberg
Some comparables for Krug’s new contract include Sami Vatanen at $4.875 million, TJ Brodie at $4.65 million, and Morgan Reilly at $5 million. Krug is still just 25 years old and has the ability to continue developing into an even more well-rounded defender for the Bruins over the life of his contract. With the buyout of Dennis Seidenberg on Thursday, it looks like the Bruins are finally starting to revamp their blue line, and Torey Krug could be one of the focal points.
