Boston Bruins: Brad Marchand Named To 2016 World Cup Of Hockey Roster For His Home Country Of Canada
After being left off of Team Canada’s original roster, Brad Marchand has finally been named to represent his country at the World Cup of Hockey in September. Many felt that Brad Marchand‘s all-around talent and breakout 37-goal season should have merited him a spot on Team Canada’s roster automatically, but it’s also hard to ignore the fact that there are many elite talents hailing from Canada in the NHL who are equally as deserving of the opportunity. Some notable omissions from Canada’s roster include Kris Letang and PK Subban.

Per the Boston Bruins’ official website, this is the fifth time Brad Marchand is playing for Canada internationally. In the past, Brad Marchand has played for Canada and won gold in the IIHF World U-20 Championships in both 2007 and 2008, a bronze medal with Team Canada Atlantic at the 2005 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, as well as more recently in the 2016 IIHF World Hockey Championships that concluded earlier this month.
Brad Marchand was originally on Team Canada’s radar for the World Cup of Hockey after scoring 37 goals and adding 24 assists for 61 points in 77 games. As a result of missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season, Brad Marchand was able to attend the IIHF World Hockey Championships with team Canada where he skated alongside Edmonton Oiler’s forward Connor McDavid and Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene. The Canadian roster proved to be the best team in the tournament by winning gold and Brad Marchand’s contributions to the team clearly earned him enough recognition to represent his country again in the World Cup of Hockey. In 10 games at the World Championships, Marchand scored four goals and three assists for seven points.

Brad Marchand’s extended offseason is proving to be his most busy off-season to date, but it’s unlikely the Nova Scotia-native is complaining as he’s getting to play the sport he loves while representing his country at the highest level in the world. Marchand will be joining Bruins’ line-mate Patrice Bergeron in representing Canada for the first time, and it will be interesting to see if the two get placed on a line together at some point in the tournament due to their impressive chemistry.
